Diversity Consortium

The following are offerings of The Consortium for Professional Development in Diversity and Global Perspectives, a collaboration of the Greater Capital Region Teacher Center (GCRTC), the Bilingual Education Technical Assistance Center (BETAC) and the Bilingual Special Education Training and Resource Center (SETRC). We are proud to offer these and other professional development opportunities in an effort to promote culturally responsive teaching.

The Diversity Kit Workshop

Through hands on activities this workshop will provide an introductory overview of The Diversity Kit, a resource which provides an invitation to all educators to examine their beliefs, perceptions, behaviors and their influence on instructional practice with respect to diversity in education. The Diversity Kit was produced by The Northeast and IslandsRegional Educational Laboratory or LAB, a program of The EducationAlliance at Brown University. You can preview the Diversity Kit online at www.lab.brown.edu/tdl/diversitykit.shtml

Some questions we may consider through hands on activities:

  • How are high expectations especially critical for culturally and linguistically diverse learners?
  • How can teachers learn about students' home cultures?
  • How can teachers use their understanding of students' home cultures to teach in culturally relevant ways?

These and many more guiding questions form the basis of the activities and vignettes provided in the Diversity Kit materials that educators can use to illustrate the impact of culture on teaching and learning.

Differentiating Instruction: English Language Learners in the Mainstream Classroom

A workshop for all educators with LEPs.

  • How can I teach my content area to students who don't understand English?
  • How do I prepare students for state exams when they are lost in a new language?

Come explore the answers to these and other questions related to the education of Limited English Proficient students. This workshop will apply the principles of Differentiated Instruction to the case of the English language learner in the mainstream classroom. Participants will use the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) Inquiry Kit materials as a springboard for discussions on adapting curriculum and instruction to the special needs of English language learners. Teachers should bring their own situations and challenges to the group. As the series unfolds over three weeks, participants will have an opportunity to develop and try out differentiated activities between sessions.
